It's possible but currently requires a different approach. Take a look at the pakyow-chat example, specifically lines 12 and 19 in
app/lib/routes.rb (note that lines 8-9 can be commented out if you're using the component approach).
The component is created in the view and subscribed to backend updates in the routes. When data changes, you tell it to prepend the message to the component's state, triggering a re-render of the component on the client.
It should be possible for this to be handled completely by Pakyow, but we're still working on it.
